Army Ski History Program going to be held in Newport New Hampshire which is part of Sullivan County New Hampshire,
During World War II, the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division served in combat for only four months, but it had one of the conflict's highest casualty rates. This here division started out as an experiment to train skiers and climbers to fight in the most difficult, mountainous terrain in Europe. There were some of the men which joined the division were skiers already, while others had never seen a ski in their lives. Their training at Camp Hale, near Pando, Colo., included skiing, snowshoeing and rock climbing. They also learned cold-weather survival tactics, such as keeping warm by building snow caves.

World War II Military Glove Liners and Gloves

The men of the 10th Mountain Division lived in the mountains for weeks, working in altitudes of up to 13,500 feet, in five to six feet of snow and in temperatures that dropped to 20 degrees below zero at night. At the end of 1944, the 10th Division was finally deployed and began the first of a series of daring assaults against the German army in the Northern Apennine Mountains of Italy. Mount Belvedere was the highest mountain in the Apennines, and the Germans had stymied the U.S. Army there for nearly six months. On Feb. 18, 1945, the 10th Division took Riva Ridge, to prevent the Germans from being able to survey U.S. positions below, in a nighttime operation.

World War II Military Snowshoes

Army Ski History Program going to be held in Newport New Hampshire which is part of Sullivan County New Hampshire, the steep mountain was covered in snow and ice. At night, the Germans did not bother with guard patrols, because the conditions were so difficult that they did not believe any American unit could climb the ridge day or night. But the Germans were wrong, and the soldiers of the men of the 10th Division climbed, silently, to the top and secured Riva Ridge with minimal casualties. The next day's operation, the assault on Mount Belvedere, would prove to be very different. The American Soldiers did ended up being victorious, but not without a price: Nearly 1,000 of the 13,000 soldiers in the 10th Division died.

Dale, very interesting post on the Army Ski History Program and I am sure all the attendees will enjoy this history lesson.  It would be interesting to see other artifacts. A wonderful experience for the children as well as the adults.

Dale, That sounds like a great presentation!  I know that the 10th Mountain Division did some of their training here in Utah as well as other mountainous areas around the country.  What a great opportunity to learn about one of the lesser known units of World War II!

Dale,

You are a teacher for me and once again I did not know about a US Army Ski Division. You told us a fascinating story about the bravery of these guys and how hard the conditions were to deal with. Another great example why we won the war and the Germans lost. Thank God for the the Great Generation and their huge contribution to lives we all lead.

All those pictures were tremendous and obviously authentic. Thanks.. I hope The Hsitorical Society gets a large turnout and everyone grasps just how important what these guys did really was to the war effort.

Dale - The Army Ski History Program being presented by the Historical Society there in Newport N.H. should be very interesting. Wish we lived closer so we could attend. Let us not ever forget the sacrifice these folks gave so that we could enjoy our freedom.

Pretty cool....reminds me of what  I learned years ago.......that in Switzerland all men have their rifle at home and once every weekend there is army practice in the mountains......wonder if they still do that........
