Home Fire Safety For First Time Home Buyers Part 8 of 12 Space Heaters, space heaters come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes. There are electric, propane, and kerosene space heaters. Sometimes during colder weather folks turn to using portable space heaters to supplement their home's main heating system. When folks misuse a space heater sure can cause them to become a fire hazard to their home. 

Back in 1994 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that electric space heaters were associated with 2,400 fires resulting in 80 deaths, 240 injuries, and $48.2 million in property loss for folks. Be sure to maintain a three foot clearace between all heating equipment and anything that can very will end up causing a fire to start in you home.

Be sure to look for a space heater, that is listed with a nationally recognized testing laboratory. These space heaters have been tested to meet specific safety standards, and manufacturers are required to provide the use and care information to folks. Never use a space heater that has a damaged electrical cord.

When using a fuel fired space heater, always use the proper fuel thats specified by the manufacturer. When you need to fefuel, allow the heater to cool and refuel it outside or in a very well ventilated area. When using a fulel heater, open a window to ensure adequate venting.

Always turn off and unplug your space heater when leaving the room or your home.

Be sure to turn off and unplug any space heaters before you and your family, goes to bed.

Those things are scary. But the way so many people hang drapes and towels over the baseboards is amazing as well. They do not get safety.

Dale I reallly like the photo with the angels...it makes a point as to the importance, just one mishap and you could be in a world of hurt. Safety certainly is important and folks need to pay attention and always turn it off when you are leaving home.

I almost missed your comments, it seems that AR is haven a bit of a problem once again, your comments did not show up on my home page.

Steven - your sure right, about some off the things folks do. Can get a bit scary at times. I've actually gone to visit folks, to walk into their home and find they have put something on a heat vent to dry.

Dale just stopped to see if you had written any new blogs on fire safety, didn't want to leave without making a comment. Seems the first cold spell you see allot more fires from space heaters and folks sometimes being careless.
