- An increase in operation and maintenance costs for your local sewer department, which ends up causing higher sewer bills for customers.

Dale, Thanks for an informative and helpful post. I have a related question. Are garbage disposals harmful to septic systems. Many sources have told me that you should not have a disposal if you have a septic tank.
Good information -- thanks for posting it -- a number of our properties in Arizona have septic.

Your welcome, for your question, on garbage disposals and septic systems. Its always advised to minimize the use of a garbage disposal even more when ya have a private septic system. A garbage disposal adds excessive organic load to your infiltrative field and other components of a home's private septic system. A garbage disposal sure will lead to more rapid buildup of scum and sludge layers in a septic tank, and increase the risk of clogging in the soil adsorption field due to higher concentration of suspended solids in the effluent.
There are septic systems that are designed to accommodate food waste, by using an additional septic tank volume, and tougher service requirements. Like using septic tank effluent filter, multiple tank, or a larger infiltration field. But its usual not worth putting the additional stress on the system. It sure can be a nightmare when your septic system ends up go-en belly up.

One of my clients moved in to a home and called me the next day about a clogged drain and was mad the inspector didn't catch it. The inspector went above and beyond the call of duty drove out there to check it out and saw the bacon package and the hamburger buns on the counter and quickly told them that it was their fault and how it happened. He was able to fix it in about an hour for them though and told them never ever to dump grease in the drain again or it will happen again.

Ceil - Thank you very kindly, I sure do like my bacon. Your sure right about its not at all good for folks health or their septic systems. But that there fryen pan full of bacon, had some oil added to it. To help make more of a point of the oil folks put down their drains, all over the Counrty and the World even.

I like the way Kent came up with that riddle. I always keep empty glass jars and dump the oil in the jar. Lots of folks around here put bacon drippings on their dogs to keep down flee's and ticks.
